This February, Glasshouse Fragrances is celebrating Mardi Gras in partnership with Qtopia, honouring queer culture, history, and community.

As part of our collaboration, we’ve sat down with Qtopia to explore their incredible work, the significance of Mardi Gras, and the stories that shape this vibrant movement.

We spoke with Greg Fisher, CEO of Qtopia Sydney, about the organisation’s story, its connection to Mardi Gras, and the incredible work happening behind the scenes.

Can you tell us about the story behind Qtopia? What inspired its creation and how has the organisation evolved?

Qtopia Sydney is fundamentally a storyteller, created to celebrate, commemorate and educate through exhibitions, performances and programs. The journey of Qtopia Sydney began nearly 40 years ago with the vision of the late Professor David Cooper. He dreamed of a space that would honour the history of those impacted by HIV/AIDS, a vision born from his work as a doctor and his close relationship with one of Australia’s first diagnosed HIV/AIDS patients, the late David Polson AM. David made it his mission to bring this vision to life, pulling together a passionate team to create Qtopia Sydney.

Since opening, we have grown from a bold concept into the world’s largest Queer history and culture centre. We’ve expanded our reach to include multiple locations, launched groundbreaking exhibitions and built a vibrant cultural hub in Darlinghurst.

What’s one thing you wish more people knew about the work Qtopia does behind the scenes?

I wish people knew just how much thought and collaboration goes into every exhibition, program and event we create. Behind the scenes, our team is tirelessly working with historians, artists and community members to ensure our work is not only engaging but also authentic and inclusive. For example, every exhibit involves months of research, careful curation and consultation with the people whose stories we are telling. This dedication ensures that what we present reflects the true diversity and vibrancy of the LGBTQIA+ community.

What exciting plans or projects are on the horizon for Qtopia Sydney? Are there any upcoming initiatives you could share with us?

2025 is a big year for us. We’re thrilled to have launched six bold new exhibitions earlier this year that celebrate everything from trailblazing role models to the resilience and creativity of Queer artistry. Plus, following the incredible success of our inaugural season, which welcomed nearly 400 artists and over 9,000 audience members, the 2025 season at The Loading Dock Theatre promises even more bold and diverse storytelling. The season features four world premieres, two Australian debuts, seven new Australian works, and a beloved classic.

Another exciting initiative is our partnership with Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras. Together, we’re hosting a series of events during the festival that showcase Queer voices from across the globe.

Beyond that, this year we will be announcing a very comprehensive plan for incursions to remote and rural schools – initially across NSW – expanding Australia wide over the coming years to ensure LGBTQIA+ stories are accessible and celebrated everywhere.

What’s the best unexpected compliment Qtopia Sydney has received about its impact?

One of the most touching compliments came from a visitor who said, “Qtopia Sydney feels like coming home”. It’s incredible to hear that we’ve created a space where people feel safe, seen and celebrated – a place where they can connect with their identity and community.

Another moment that sticks with me was when a young person told us, “I didn’t realise how much of my history was out there until I walked through your doors”. That sense of discovery and empowerment is exactly what we hope to inspire.

Mardi Gras is all about unforgettable moments – what’s been your most epic, standout memory from the celebration?

It’s hard to pick just one, but I’d have to say the first time Qtopia Sydney participated in the Mardi Gras Parade. Seeing our team march with our float – celebrating Queer history and culture under the bright lights of Oxford Street – was electric.
